Draw a box over the mark, a logo, a stock-photo stamp, a caption bar, and the tool fills it in by spreading the colours from just outside the box inward, so the mark is covered by something that matches its surroundings instead of a black block. It works best over plain or gently shaded areas; over busy detail a smooth fill can look soft, so there is a blur mode too. Add as many boxes as you need.

PNG keeps every pixel exact; JPEG is smaller. The fill is flattened into the image either way.
Fill, not cover
Dropping a solid rectangle over a watermark just swaps one mark for another, and anyone can see something was there. This tool instead grows the surrounding pixels into the boxed area: it takes the colour and shading around the edge of your box and diffuses it inward until the hole is filled, so the patch blends into the picture. It is the same idea as a content-aware fill, run small and fast in the browser.
Where it works and where it struggles
A watermark sitting over sky, skin, a wall or an even gradient comes out cleanly. A watermark lying across sharp detail, text on a book, a face, a patterned fabric, cannot be truly reconstructed, because the information under the mark is gone; the fill will look soft or smeared there. Keep each box tight to the mark so there are good pixels right up against it to pull from, and use several small boxes rather than one big one over a complex area. The blur mode is a fallback for busy spots where a smooth fill reads worse than a blur.

This is the visible half: a mark you can see and point at. Robust invisible watermarks, the kind spread across the whole image and built to survive edits, are not something a box-and-fill pass removes; that is a paid tool. Removing a watermark you do not have the rights to remove can also be a copyright issue, so use this on your own images or where you are permitted to.
