On a JPEG the tags are snipped out and the image data is left alone. A PNG works differently, so this file is rebuilt to drop the tags. PNG is a lossless format, so the picture you see is unchanged; the only difference is the file is re-encoded from scratch rather than edited tag by tag.

What this removes
It clears the tags a photo carries about itself: the GPS coordinates and altitude, the camera and lens make, model and serial number, the software that saved it, the capture and edit timestamps, and the embedded thumbnail that can still show the original, uncropped shot. On a JPEG the tags are removed directly, so the image is never re-compressed and its quality is untouched. A PNG or WebP is rebuilt instead: these are lossless formats too, so the picture keeps its quality, but the whole file is re-encoded rather than edited tag by tag.
What it cannot remove
Stripping metadata clears what the file says about itself, not what the picture shows. A street sign, a skyline, a house number or a reflection in someone's glasses can still place a photo, and a location-guessing model reads those pixels whether or not there is any GPS tag left. Removing the tags is the right first step and defeats the tools that only read metadata, but it is not the same as being untraceable. Finding and neutralising visual location cues in the image itself is a heavier job that needs a model, and that is where a GPU-backed version of this tool goes further than the free in-browser one.
Your photo stays on your device
The image is read, stripped and re-saved entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the clean copy is generated locally the moment you click download. If a location is found you can check it before you strip, and only if you click the map link are those coordinates ever sent anywhere. Close the tab and no trace remains.
