Break an acoustic fingerprint without wrecking the audio

Services like Shazam recognise a clip by hashing the strongest peaks in its spectrogram into a compact fingerprint. Shift every peak a little in frequency and change which peaks stand out and that fingerprint stops matching, while the clip still sounds like itself. This runs on your device and changes nothing about the words or the timing.

Why a small shift is enough

An acoustic fingerprint is anchored to exact time and frequency positions of spectral peaks. Move those positions even slightly and the hashes no longer line up, so a lookup misses. A shift of well under a semitone is usually inaudible on speech and music yet moves every peak, which is why the default is subtle. Larger shifts are more robust but start to sound processed.

What this does not do

This defeats simple peak-hash fingerprinting of the kind used for song identification. It is not aimed at a learned matcher such as a platform Content ID system, which is trained to look past pitch and EQ changes, and it does nothing about a watermark deliberately embedded in the audio. Treat it as breaking a lookup, not as making a clip untraceable. A server-side GPU version can push the shift harder against tougher matchers.

Compare, then download in any format

After you apply, the Before and After players sit side by side so you can check the clip still sounds right before you commit. Then download it as lossless WAV or FLAC, so the change is not muddied by re-compression, or as a smaller MP3, M4A or Opus. M4A and Opus are offered only when your browser can create them.
